Once again, Koby Trinker and Katrina VanWijk put on one hell of an event in Revelstoke, BC. In its’ second year running, the Jordan River Festival (also known as #theJRFyo) is an impeccably planned 4-day event with something for everyone including beginner to advanced kayakers, outdoor spectator enthusiasts, and party-goers.
In it’s prior self, the Jordan Race was an informal buddy race down Revy’s nearby creek. While this aspect of the event remains true to its’ origins, this jam-packed grassroots kayak festival now also features instructional courses, a film fest, dance party, and races on three separate rivers; the Illecillewaet, Jordan, and Perry. With a team ball race, boatercross, buddy creek race, single creek race, and two intermediate races, there’s an event or two or more for kayakers of all abilities. The community supports the event and I was blown away by the generosity of the people who ran shuttles all day (Kate Shea & Kate Nichols), cooked up a mean feed (Sam Bouchard), & helped drag up grills and other festival necessities (Tarryl & team).
Katrina and Koby’s event is a prime example of, “If you build it, they will come.” Last year the event was incredible and word must have been firing because this year the turn out was substantially larger. Not only was there a women’s field, but it was stacked. They put in a ridiculous amount of hard work, and the food, prizes, organization, and overall vibe is worth putting this event on your ‘to-do’ list for next year’s Canada long weekend. (I don’t know what this Canada long weekend is all about, so if you’re ignorantly un-Canadian like me, I think it’s the first week in August).
Anyways, I thought it was the bees knees! I love all my friends for being there and doing cool things! Check out better information at http://paddlerevelstoke.ca/jordan-river-festival/and on the ultimate source of all things… https://www.facebook.com/events/2094677604138103
